My Process
These are the six steps I follow when creating a case study project. I apply this thinking across design projects of all mediums to create the best project that I can.
1.
Every great design starts with a question. Before anything is sketched or built or researched, I take time to uncover and understand a real problem. I take existing issues and push my thinking to create concepts that would better the project. This is the step where the best solutions come from asking the right questions first.
2.
Good design is always informed by insight. I study the audience, the context, the competitors, the landscape, and more to build a foundation that is grounded in something real that will connect to the viewer or user. To me, this is the most important step in giving the work gets its backbone.
3.
While research is continued throughout the project, I now have a better understanding of what I am trying to solve. Now, it’s time to define a clear direction for the work. Goals are set, priorities are established, and a plan is put in place so that every design decision that follows has a reason behind it. Nothing ends up in the envelope by accident.
4.
This is where the concept becomes visual. I explore, refine, and push the work until it communicates clearly and looks intentional doing it. This can be seen from early sketches to the final product. Form and functionality are also important in this step.
5.
The design gets constructed with precision and care to ensure that everything is looking as it should. This can take many rounds. Every detail is considered, every element earns its place, and the work is refined until it is ready to go out the door.
6.
The finished work, packaged and sent. Designed to land well, make an impression, and hold up long after it has been opened for the first time.
